What I have found is that while a popular page like "Jules Verne" attracts a lot of vandalism and "beagle " activity, the individual books like Mysterious Island, and the lesser known ones are universally left alone. And so no one except a Vernophile will ever look at the "Begum" page it is probably fairly safe. Also the "Orinoco " page is a stub so it is probably a safe page to work on. There are also a couple of good editors who follow the JVF and they help keep things straight.

        Norm,

It seems this is an extraordinary amount of work, and I think Bill's evaluation yesterday is correct. But most relevant is the point you make yourself, "The wikipedia beagles keep deleting new stuff too"--I've found that happening in many pages I've followed in various fields outside JV. No sooner is good material added than somebody deletes it, often reinstating old, inaccurate data. I've seen no end of "stubs" that remain so, not because they don't have contributors, but because these "beagles" promptly remove any contributions.

I wonder if the effort you are making might better go with one of the other authoritative Verne webpages by some of the Forum members. These, I have found in my own contacts with non-specialists, are increasingly picked up in searches, and it is gratifying to know the good sites are found. Wikipedia, by its lack of the remotest kind of knowledgable editorial review, and its openness to constant changes, seems a lost cause. Or else it has to be constantly monitored lest it slip its leash and run away ....

        Good luck.

It reminds me of the Irish joke: if you were going there, I certainly wouldn’t start from here! While Wikipedia is in general a wonderful resource, the Verne section is hopeless. What would need doing, as a minimum, is the following:

Ø scrap the existing biography page

Ø remove the American bias from the Verne pages

Ø take account of the research of the past 40 years, mostly not in English

Ø avoid repeating half-truths, myths, inventions and stereotypes.

While I wish you luck, I’m not optimistic substantial change can be made.

While my computer is bust I have been trying to update some Wikipedia articles. The ones I have been workiing on are Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon, Mysterious Island, Lewis Mercier, Stephen White, W.H.G. Kingston. I have not tried to rewrite everything and some of the articles have grown too long with additional material added in, The wikipedia beagles keep deleting new stuff too so it is an ongoiing process. Also old links disappear and need to be replaced. Let me know if there is anything in particular you think needs to be changed in any of the Wikipedia articles and I will do my best.
