Harry,

You are referring to the 1958 version.

There are many others, none of them "faithful," but variable in quality and worth. Ironically the first remains the best after more than a centure.

Melies's LE VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE / A TRIP TO THE MOON (1902) is also influenced by Wells and Offenbach.

A similar work, VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE / NUEVO VIAJE A LA LUNA (Pathe, 1909), was
directed by Segundo de Chomon

The first feature version was FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON (WB, 1958), which follows Verne only loosely in outline and some character names, but violates its spirit, and is a very badly made film on every level.

THOSE FANTASTIC FLYING FOOLS / BLAST-OFF! [JULES VERNE'S ROCKET TO THE MOON in UK] (AIP, 1967) harkened back to the whimsical approach of Melies, and only includes De la terre a la lune.

FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON (Air Programs International, 1975) *
director, Richard Slapczynski; producer, Walter J. Hucker. animated; 60 mins.
Probably the weakest of this series, and departs even more from the book than the previous versions.

For my taste, after Melies, only the film in question, JULES VERNE'S ROCKET TO THE MOON, comes close to capturing some of the novel's spirit..

Brian

It depends which version you mean. Do you mean the version where the rocket splits in two (leading to one half crashing on the moon) or do you mean the version where the launching site is in Wales?

Another filme about "From the Earth to the Moon". This movie is known too as "Blast-off". I think it's no loyal with regard the book of Jules Verne.
