Dear Brian, Christian and friends,
Fascinating! Is there any way we can see this movie? Can we order it from
some foreign venue? Can we show it at a NAJV meeting? I'm sure I'm not the
only one who wants to see it after reading Brian's description!!!

Christian,
You can read how this was made in my article
http://jv.gilead.org.il/taves/withwill.html
and I have an extensive analysis of it in The Jules Verne Encyclopedia.
Turning from Hollywood, our Russian colleague is quite correct to note the
exemplary quality of the 1941 film of the novel, a poetic and faithful
version whose design is derived from the engravings, although not to the
degree of the animation techniques of Karel Zeman. Indeed, many of the
Russian JV films are to be lauded.
This 1941 version of L'Ile mysterieuse was one of the films I was glad to be
able to have included in the 2005 Nantes Utopiales JV film fest (in that
case, a French subtitled version). Sadly, this film has had no release in
the US, although it is mentioned in many reference sources.

Hi Christian .I been part of the club too. Over the years I never understood
why nobody talks about the Russian version of Mysterious Island the only
accurate one(
http://www.sukip.com/Movies/Mysterious_Island_1941_film) .I
watched in Bucharest in 1961 and it took me 15 years to get it .Finally I
got it from e-bay for $40 (on DVD not VSH) where I made an offer and I got
it from Russia. This link shows the pain they took(just imagine the german
invasion begun) to reproduce every picture from the book.At your disposal
with other information.Sincerly yours Emil

A new version of "The Mysterious island" is on line right now, included a
trailer in youtube. I think this old movie is no loyal too from Verne's
book, it seems "20000 leagues under the sea".
