Why on earth did the Spanish decide to colonise a part of the world
that's so unbearably hot??? We've now in Florida (about a week away
from our end location of Stones' Hill) and thank goodness we have been
able to spend a day on the sea shore is all I can say. We're at a place
called Daytona Beach on the Atlantic side of the state and I have never
been so glad to get out of a train and enjoy the gentle slow trot of a
horse.

The last few days have been absolutely stifling with my box of tricks
recording temperatures inside the train of well into the 100's
(yesterday it reached 102°F) and at several occasions I was worried
about the health of my son and wife (as both looked awfully ill).
Passepartout on the other hand didn't seem to mind too much (although I
did have to chastise him when he entered the carriage in a state of
undress that caused me to blush) and Mr. Barbicane somehow managed to
stay in a suit (when I had to take off my waistcoat and jacket) and
declared "This is normal, now California, that's hot!"

But we are all having a wonderful time here. William's been enjoying a
hearty swim (to prove that his first place at last year's swimming gala
was not a fluke) myself and my wife have been paddling and enjoying the
cool waters and Mr. Barbicane has invited us all to enjoy what he
claims is the best cooling drink in the world (although I suspect that
it doesn't come close to a cup of mint tea). Which reminds me, where's
Passepartout got to? Passepartout, would you please get off that high
beam and let the acrobats have a turn!
