Bill,
The photo is taken from "Limekilns to Culross. Back in Time", Eric Simpson and George Robertson, European Library,1995. I got permission from Mr Simpson to put it on the web. I believe that the original is a postcard in his possession. It would be interesting to know more about the scene...it looks as though it was posed, and as it was a tiny inn and unlikely to be frequented by women and children, there must have been some event taking place perhaps to account for the number of persons.

A lovely photo! It reminds me of the rear aspect of the house that the Vernes rented in Chantenay from about 1840.
 
But are you sure that it’s in copyright? If Mr Simpson is claiming ownership, that would seem to involve contacting both the inheritors and the descendants of the photographer.

 Here is an image of the Black Anchor Tavern, visited by Verne and Hignard with the Reverend Smith at Crombie Point in 1859 where they recovered from the rain and wind of their sail from Edinburgh. The Copyright belongs to Eric Simpson and the image was supplied to me by Kerr Doig who is organising the Verne celebrations of Verne's visit to Oakley.
