That would help explain some of the ambiguity, since historical Bengal
covered parts of about 5 modern states in India.

 

A nice example of Esperanto: about two thirds can be guessed even if one
doesn’t speak a word of the language!

A friend of mine from Kolkata essentially confirms the idea that there must
have been confusion with the Golconda near Hyderabad. He adds that such
confusion may stem also from a propension, common at that time, to attribute
different things to Bengal only because Calcutta was the capital of the
British Raj until 1911.
