My dear Phileas. I wanted to telegraph you and thank you for all the
hard work you put in during the recent election. As a way of thanking
you personally, I have decided to appoint you as Leader of the House of
Lords. I shall of course not formally make the announcement until after
Christmas, but might I recommend taking a subscription to Hansard in
order to get yourself familiar with job. Wishing yourself, your wife
and son a Merry Christmas and a Happy (if rather busy) New Year. Yours,

Well, talk about an early Christmas present. Thank you, I shall have to
