Well, there's sunset on the last day of our narwhal chase (or rather no
narwhal chase). Over the last six months we've done everything I can
think of bar dangling a female narwhal over the side. Yesterday we even
dangled large chunks of bacon (and all that attracted were some very
grateful sharks). Come midday tomorrow, we will turn tail and head back
to San Francisco where I dare say the local members of the science
clubs will be on the shore laughing their heads off saying "Look,
there's Professor Arronax who went looking for a narwhal and ended up
with egg on his face!"

Even Conseil, my manservant agrees with me. Sorry, what was that? I'll
get my just desserts? Well, maybe, I don't know, all I do is know is
that... Was that Ned? What is it Ned, you're jumping around more than
the beans from Mexico! You've seen a weather beam? Where? Mon Dieu,
that's not possible. Phosporous! Sorry, Ned, my apolgies, scientific
mind don't you know. It's a chemical that some animals produce to allow
them to see at night or as a lure. No, no, no, wait a minute.
Phosporous can't react underwater. That means it's an electrical
animal. Hang on, where's that camera that Doctor Smith was in here. Why
can I never find things in a hurry. Ah, now, where is it now? Three
miles? Goodness, I hope this camera can reach that far

No, too far away to say what it is for certainity. But I think we have
found our thing. All we need to do now is keep a very close eye on it.
