Dear Joe,

Certainly, this translation seems to be the best we’ve got. It has all the
chapters, and even the same number of words, and is generally faithful, but
omits sentences like “Aussi, on le verra, celui-ci devait résister aux
tentatives les plus ingénieuses, et cela, dans des circonstances de la plus
haute gravité.” and translates, for instance, « milliards » (billions) by «
millions ». Remember Art’s tick only means “relatively good”, a second rank,
for reasons of completeness/accuracy/style.

It’s rather the edition I could never wholeheartedly recommend: not
respecting the moral rights of the translator, seeking to make a profit
without, apparently, informing the purchaser of what he/she’s getting. But
then again, this applies to most modern editions of Verne...

What we need, of course, is a Collected Works, with a properly established
text and faithful and integral translations. Perhaps by 2030?

Best regards,

Bill

Dear Bill,

I don't understand why you can't recommend this version. According to Evan's
Bibliography, this translation, though an old one, gets a check, which he
means to be a good translation. Since there is no modern translation of this
particular novel available, what else can you do if you want to read it and
can't read French?

Best regards,

Joe

Ayn,

Amazon is distinctly careless in not distinguishing different editions and
translations of a given novel, and in this case using “Look Inside” takes
you to a different edition, which itself merely recycles an old translation.
The main page cites “THE MAN who held in his hand the document of which this
strange assemblage of letters formed the concluding paragraph remained for
some moments lost...”, which is also from the old translation. So, on that
basis, it can’t really be recommended.

Incidentally, the fine cover photo may be taken from Wikipedia, which claims
it is out of copyright worldwide, although the situation does not seem
entirely clear.

Best regards,

Bill
