Hi, Michael - have enjoyed your site over the past few years. Have
you seen my novel 'Nautilus' which came out just before Christmas?
It's on Amazon. The book contains a single drawing of the 'Nautilus'
which is solidly based on Verne's original ( the only change I made
was to restrict her depth capability to a more believable one). If
you see this, note the deck housing. Forward of the wheelhouse, this
joins the main hull in a dished shape which resembles the ram bow of a
late Victorian warship. This creates a triangular shape at the top,
which could have caused the damage to the 'Scotia'. Nemo was piloting
her only a fathom beneath the surface when he collided with the
'Scotia' so that the submarine's actual bow would have been well below
the 'Scotia's' keel. Something higher up must have caused that
damage. The prow of the deck housing is my answer to the riddle. In
my reconstruction, the bow of the 'Nautilus' tapers down to a point,
much as the Gagneaux model. No spear, no serrated edges.
If you do get hold of the book, then I'd be more than happy for you to
add my drawing to your site.
The novel begins with a retelling of the final parts of "The
Mysterious Island", then jumps to the 21st century when a Greenpeace
type vessel (I invented a new group called 'Deep Watch') is equally
mysteriously lost with all hands in Antarctic waters. After this, a
trail of damaged whalers and commercial vessels seem to accompany the
finding of bars of antique gold around the world.
A retired investigative journalist and a naval intelligence officer
set out to find the causes. Both end up in deep danger, and in the
presence of an avenging legend.
Basically Nemo is long dead. His boat isn't.
Yours,
Craig Weatherhill
