Blankand of course, I'll put it in the style of good old Phileas!!!
February 17th 1882
I find myself in a bit of a quandary. I have been invited to attend a
discussion / symposium on the author Jules Verne (a person I happen to know
very well indeed) and would like to thank him for reporting my trip around
the world a decade ago, however the dates that have been published (November
17th - 20th) causes all sorts of problems.
The first problem is that I might not be living here at the time. We are
trying to sell the house (for the last eighteen months without success) and
therefore I do not have the immediate funds to travel to Amiens. Secondly, I
have decided to become a volunteer carer for my dear next door neighbours
(now advanced in age) and wonder what they would think if I suddenly
disappeared for six days. I am worried that they would not be able to cope
(and I don't want to put any extra pressure on my wife or Passepartout).
Then there is the third and perhaps most weightly problem. As you know I'm a
Liberal and although we should have a general election before this event, I
can't help shaking the feeling that the current popularity charts
(suggesting a convincing Conservative win) can't be trusted and that if
there was a Parliament without a single party getting an overall majority, a
second election might have to be called and November is the most likely
month in which that would happen and I would not like to pull out of such a
meeting at the last minute in case people started to think ill of me.
So there you have my problems. I would dearly love to attend and listen to
the discussions (and give Jules a good old shake of the hand) but all of
these other events are crowding things out.
I have placed the Jules Verne News blog on my following page, so if an event
happens a little closer to Wales then at least I will have a bit of notice
about it.
