I have just been a witness to something no man should ever see. It all
started two days ago when we were all suddenly confined to quarters
without any explaination at all, then yesterday the Captain came in,
took me to one side and asked if I knew anything about medicine.

Naturally enough, I asked why and the Captain took me to the infirmary
where one of his crew was in a terrible state. I could tell instantly
he had suffered a fatal injury and that there was nothing I could
possibly do. As soon as I said this, the Captain's expression changed
from hope to absolute despair. I can only assume that living on a
machine as small as this every member of the crew becomes like a next
door neighbour or family relation and if one member dies then the whole
crew feels it. I shan't go into the details of the injury, but let me
just say this, the injury was akin to having been hit on the head with
a mallet (or something larger and heavier).

I am now in the library watching a funeral procession with a
difference, an underwater funeral procession and have decided that if
the Captain permits it, I will talk with the various members of the
crew to see if I can assist them in this most difficult time for them
