Was there ever a project to reconstitute Verne's library, not on paper, but
with all the books we know or guess he owned, and in editions he would have
likely been able to consult? It would be a long-term project, perhaps, but a
terrific resource. Many of these books are on Gallica but not all.

style="color: #000000;">It's difficult to say which was the exact source of
Verne, because many authors copied each other. Louis Figuier is a very
important source, that's right (Bill Butcher published a good article on
this problem), but Figuier himself took many informations from Francois
Arago's works, (vol. 5: "Des puits forés"; "Astronomie populaire",
vol. 2: "De l'intérieur de la Terre"), and the complete works of
both authors were in Vernes library. On the other hand, there is "Les
Révolutions du globe" by Alexandre Bertrand (7th edition 1863,
published by Hetzel) who also indicates "70 feet" (p. 41) per degree. A
complementary source is Pierre Boitard, "Paris avant les hommes" (Pas sard
1861), first published in the years 1830 in "Musée des familles", a
very striking book.<br />You see, problems of sources are not less
complicated than the different states of the published text...<br
