Peter,
you are right, in reminding us about the actual feeling of spending time while 'getting there' -
-the journey itself.
As to how much quicker it is possible to travel (from anywhere) to the Gausta Mountain nowadays
- have a look at my webpage where Verne´s own drawings from his 1861-journey are displayed:
 Included on this page is a google interactive streetview + map, which 'zooms' any viewer directly to Dale, Rjukan and Gausta:

[PS if interested;
when 'inside' the embedded Google viewer, it is also possible (if the Jawa-script runs smoothly on the computer)
- to turn around 180 degrees, and then on the left hand side can be seen the actual site where The Inn at Dal stood in the 1860ies, now it is replaced by the 'Maar' powerplant.
more 'guiding' on request ;-)  ]

Many thanks, Bill!

This is great, as it is now 150 years ago he went to this journey in Scandinavia.

Now I do know why there aren't any great novels like Jules Verne's anymore: he had weeks to travel from Stockholm to Gausta Mountain - myself only need less than 15 hours by car. Weeks of wonderful impressions beats the way we travel today. Eventhough he had a lot of armchair traveling when writing his novels, the journey itself was important in the novel.

Best regards,
Peter Harold
