The short answer is they didn't. They simply reprinted the earliest English text, the 1871 UK version published by Griffith & Farren, in which the anonymous translator renames the professor (plus other characters) and recomposes Verne's novel on a page-by-page basis. This, along with the translations of America's Edward Roth, is among the p.d. texts Vernians most love to loathe.
