Here are some good resources on the quality of translations into English of Jules Verne's texts: http://jv.gilead.org.il/evans/VerneTrans%28article%29.html   http://www.verniana.org/volumes/01/A4/ArtBiblio.pdf What you will find is that the widely-available and inexpensive copies today are often the poorest translations from the 19th century because they are public domain.  The character name change in Mysterious Island is a well known marker of one of the poor translations.  In terms of the old English-language editions, they are more for looking upon (binding, illustrations) than reading if a good modern translation is available. For Mysterious Island, one of the recommended new editions is translated by Sidney Kravitz:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0819565598  Do note, however, that the free Kindle version is not the same translation.  I don't think it should be linked to this listing.
