As members know, Verne had a very interesting career outside writing.
He gained a law degree in 1849, was a coastguard during the Franco
Prussian war in 1870 and in 1888 became a councillor. Members will also
know that since 2004 I too have been seeking election to various
councils in Ceredigion, the most recent of these is the county council
of Ceredigion (where I am the duly nominated Liberal Democrat candidate
for the Llansantffraed ward) but can say this evening, that what took
Verne 60 years to do, I have managed to do in a little under 38.
"I, being the Returning Officer at the above election, report that the
persons whose names appear below are duly elected Community Councillors
for the said Community without a contest. COLLEDGE, GRAHAM EDWARD;
HAYFIELD, HARRY; HUGHES, JAMES; JAMES, MEURIG (Plaid); LAWTON, MALCOLM
JOHN; LEWIS, GERALLT ELFYN (Plaid); LLOYD, LODWICK; MORGAN, DENNIS;
REED, IORWERTH OWEN; TOMLINS, BRYAN CHARLES".
Which means that in the middle of May (regardless of what happens in
the county ward I am contesting) and once I have signed the legal
documents that entitle me to say it, I shall be able to say "Hello, I'm
Cllr. Harry Hayfield, the Liberal Democrat community councillor on the
Llansantffraed Community Council!"
