Harpers Weekly, NYT and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper report, in 1874, that there was concern in North Carolina that a volcano was causing earth quakes. "A great commotion" was reported including strange sounds from the ground and shaking. So while Table Rock mountain certainly LOOKS interesting, the news that Verne may well have worked from to create MW might well have been the sensationalistic reports about this event;
