Yes.  I researched Franklin File yesterday but didn't post the summary.  Here it is: Franklin File Franklin Fyles (November 1847 - 5 July 1911) Born in New York in November 1847 as "Franklin File" to Frederick File (a farmer, born about 1815) and Mary J. File (born about 1815).  In the 1850 Federal census for Brunswick, Rensselaer County, New York he also had an older brother, Charles File (born about 1842). In the 1880 census, Franklin File (age 31) is listed as an editor in New York City with his wife Sarah (28) and daughter Florena (2 9/12). The 1890 census was lost to fire.  However, in that year Franklin File "obtained from a New York court permission to spell his name Fyles, the old Holland way of spelling it.  He doesn't want to be called an "old file."  Morning Star (newspaper), 26 Oct 1890. Hence, by the 1900 census for New York City he is listed as Franklin Fyles (52, born in Nov 1847), a journalist, with his wife Sarah (45, born in Sep 1854), son Frank E. (18, born in Dec 1881), and daughter Florena (20, born in Aug 1880). In the 1910 census he is a journalist in New York City (age 62) with his wife Sarah Olive (61) and a son whose name appears to be Baudecheyden (age 21) who is also listed as a journalist. According to entries in the Biography and Genealogy Master Index, he died in 1911 and is  included in the following reference volumes: American Authors & Books (Crown, 1972) Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature (HarperCollins, 1991) A Dictionary of American Authors, 5th ed (Houghton Mifflin, 1904) A Dictionary of North American Authors Deceased before 1950 (Ryerson, 1951) Notable Names in the American Theatre (White, 1976) The Oxford Companion to American Theatre (Oxford University Press, 1984) The Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature (Crowell, 1962) Who Was Who in America, volume 1, 1897-1942 (Marquis, 1943) I don't find him in the New York City Death Index but the file may be incomplete in the online version or he may have lived elsewhere by 1911. There are several stories by him in newspapers as well as magazines and books under both names. He was for many years a drama editor and critic for the New York Sun newspaper. _____   James D.
