Bill is right. Harry actually quoted from the sempiternal G. M. Towle translation, which is significantly less reliable than Bill's excellent OUP rendering.
All the best,

Subject: A "Bearded" Fogg?
Dear All,
I’d like to reopen this thread of a while back, where Harry Hayfield claimed below to be quoting my translation of AWED, as follows:
“People said that he resembled Byron,—at least that his head was Byronic; but he was a bearded, tranquil Byron, who might live on a thousand years without growing old.”
However, what I actually wrote was very different:
“He was said to look like Byron : his head at least, for his feet were beyond reproach but a mustachioed and bewhiskered Byron, an impassive Byron, one who might have lived for a thousand years without ever growing old.”
Apologies for any confusion in the subsequent exchanges,
Bill

Tout cela est très agréable, je suis sûr, et j'espère que l'entreprise a beaucoup de succès dans cette entreprise, mais il n'est pas exactement ce que je qualifierais de «Byron» est-il? (Francais)
All very nice I am sure, and I hope that the company has a great deal of success in that venture, but he's not exactly what I would call "Byronic" is he? (English)
